Kinja'd!!!

After a successful PTG (Parent Teacher Group) meeting last night, I have been chosen to join a task force, if you will, of parents and teachers to help quell the issues with the parking lot at my daughters’ school!

I will be working firsthand with the principal on re-designing a map that will notify parents of HOW and WHERE to drop off/pick up children, as well as where NOT to go and what NOT to do.

Like, skip ahead of the waiting line of cars by driving ON THE RIGHT between us and the playground, then crossing in front of the first waiting car at the curb to drop off your shitty little kids.

OR. Skipping the line on the left and stopping in the middle of the one lane road and holding up traffic as you let your shitty little kid out BETWEEN TWO BUSES.

Every day its something new.

I even volunteered to set up cones, and direct traffic as need be, as I am usually to school with 45 minutes to spare between child drop-offs.

The main thing is, I wasn’t the only one noticing the general asshattery of drivers, and the dangerous conditions they were causing. Most of the parents (about 15) in the meeting voiced that they knew of issues.

We were also made aware a child had died at another school in the state during drop off/pick up.

Things need to change.

I’m happy to help.

Now I just need authorization to slap some parents upside the head for doing the kind of shit I saw this morning... and EVERY morning.

Way to take action! I suggest dressing up like Humungus from Mad Max and guarding the school entrance with harpoons and flamethrowers.

Congrats! Place sea mines in the parking area to block vehicles off. That’ll teach ‘em quick.

I’m still completely confused by these schools that have enough kids dropped off by car for this to be an issue (though they seem common here in Houston). I’d estimate that at the schools I attended (including three different elementary schools) ~90% of kids either walked or took the bus, until they could drive themselves in high school.

well, us RallyX guys give out 2 second penalties for hitting a cone and a 10 second for missing a gate.

If they hit a cone make them sit in the parking lot unable to move for 2 minutes. If they completely miss the cone lanes - 10 minutes.

You make a parent sit 10 minutes in a drop off lane because of a stupid mistake I doubt they miss it again when they miss that first meeting of the day.

Oh, they’ll probably hate you though. Just a heads up.

Good luck with that. We have a very specific car rider line that goes around the back of the school. People constantly cut in, or stop and hold up the line to let their snowflake out where they’re not supposed to. I suggest spike strips.

Thankfully, they just built a new school nearby, so our enrollment is down to 500 instead of over 1000. That cuts down considerably on congestion at pick up and drop off.

Also, kudos to you for volunteering. I'm on our PTA board, and the number of parents who actually pitch in is pathetic. They'd rather bitch.

Its a combination of

1. Too close to school to be bused without a fee

2. Too far to not be a 20 minute walk.

We’re just far enough (and now that I got one kid starting at 7, the other at 8) that it makes no sense to walk. It takes us 15-20 minutes to do so (slow kids) and school is on my way to work, so it makes little sense to have to walk back home to get the car.

I’d imagine its a similar story for most of the parents dropping off by car.

That, or because of all the creepy child molester free candy van Amber Alert stories we keep hearing.

Paint ball machine gun. Not only does it shock the intended victim, it boldly colors them so all other drivers can instantly recognize the assclown who can’t conform to the minimum safety standards to keep kids safe. Back up plan for when they screw up the second time? A baseball bat with 6 inch nails through it in all directions. Makes a loud noise when bashing in hoods, makes a pleasant squeal when pulled along painted doors

There was a 10 million dollar referendum that didn’t pass last year, part of it was adding a new driveway to the front of school JUST for drop off and pick up.

It would have helped IMMENSELY to keep the cars separate from the buses, and contained to one single file line, like at my other daughter’s school. I’m not sure why it works so well there.... maybe because its only the third week of school and I don’t have to hang around there long enough to see, but there don’t seem to be any line cutters or people who park and block traffic.

Sweet.. traffic calming;

Kinja'd!!!

I did my first kindergarten dropoff this morning, It was pretty calm - although the school has an intricate system of bus only/staff only/ parent drop off loops.

I was more alarmed at how many grade 6/7 kids appeared to be carrying coffees (hopefully it was HC).

Lol I’m sure some of the parents who also voiced their opinions are equal offenders. Good on you, cones will help a lot! Sad that a kid had to die at the other school to get people to think about safety.

Sounds like spike strips would be perfect. Or maybe somebody holding a stop sign. Of course, somebody tried to run down a teacher holding a stop sign at the entrance to the front lot a couple of years ago. The sheriff’s office arrested him.

The thing is, everyone was talking about it BEFORE the principal told us of the death. It had been on his mind, we all just seemed to have spoken up at the right time.

My email went out last Friday, and the meeting (the first of the school year) was yesterday, and he had planned on bringing up parking lot safety anyways.

I drive past a school twice a day. People will stop in the street (divided, two lanes each way), put on their hazard lights and let their kid out.

They are bad parents.

I occasionally took my sister to school during her last years of high school (driving age here is 18 and the process takes 4 ish months) and I can tell you every day was an ordeal, especially in a school with more than 2 thousand kids.

I’m used to it. We moved partly because there was some high falutin board member on the school board who’s daughter was a Hellspawn and if you weren’t in her little gang of friends you were ridiculed and bullied and all kinds of things... we tried numerous times to have the school intervene (talked to the parents myself, they were NUTSO) but because $he $upported the $chool $o much, they couldn’t do anything as far as punishment or changing of classes.

Thankfully I biked to school.

But when one of the poorer kids hit one of the richer kid’s brand new(he got one every year) Ram 2500? That was one hell of a fight lemme tell you.

Can you authorise use of the car park for doing skids outside of school hours? These are the important questions people need to be asking.

Seriously though this is important stuff, when I pick up my little brother from school I often end up shouting at people for dickbag manoeuvres.

As antithetical as it is to us, encourage parents to walk their kids to school if possible - especially if they live within say... half a mile of the school. Most of the people doing this won’t be the people out to enjoy a drive anyway (statistically speaking). Moreover, spend some time outdoors with your kid and get some bloody excersize. 2/3 of America’s adults are overweight. Let’s instill some healthy attitudes and habits in these kids, and maybe that number will shrink.

And remember - the less you weigh, the faster you can accelerate.
